5 Easy Ways To Reduce Signs Of Aging
Reduce wrinkles and get smoother skin without plastic surgery!
Some people think that the only way to repel the signs of age is to set their face up for a date with the plastic surgeon. Fortunately, it doesn't have to be that extreme. Here are five quick and simple ways to help stay young.
- 1. Wear sunscreen daily. With a daily dab of sunscreen, you can help avoid the dryness, wrinkles, blotches, and leathery skin caused by sun exposure. "The number one intervention people can do to help their skin is wear sunscreen," says Dr. Heather Woolery-Lloyd, a dermatologist with the University of Miami Cosmetic Group. "I recommend at least SPF 30 for the face. Buy products that have both UVA and UVB coverage." Sunscreen helps even if you're not outside for hours, according to Woolery-Lloyd. Even the sun you're exposed to on a 30-minute drive to the office can be harmful.
- 2. Add antioxidants. A recent French study found that topical creams containing vitamin C can help prevent damage and heal skin aging caused by the sun. "Look for vitamin C in night creams or eye creams," says Woolery-Lloyd. "Choose products in small, dark, or narrow-necked bottles and airtight tubes. If an opened product has been sitting around in your cabinet for a few months, it's probably lost a lot of its vitamin C effectiveness." Vitamin C is also good for the production of collagen, which provides structural support to your skin.
- 3. Eat and sip for youth. A healthy diet, including fresh fruits and vegetables, can pack a good punch of anti-aging antioxidants. In addition, Woolery-Lloyd also recommends sipping on green tea, because it possesses powerful compounds that researchers found were helpful in preventing the sun's ultraviolet rays from penetrating skin.
- 4. B vitamin conscious. Biotin, a B vitamin found in grains, egg yolks, cheese, and meats, especially liver, may help promote hair and nail health. And those who are biotin deficient can suffer hair loss and brittle, splitting nails. "Hair thins as we age, so adding more biotin in our diets can help strengthen our hair and nails as they become more susceptible," says Woolery-Lloyd.
- 5. Review routines. Don't panic if you suddenly look in the mirror and see laugh lines and wrinkles. "No matter what your age or skin condition is, there's always help," says Woolery-Lloyd. "Topical retinoid creams are great for wrinkles." Improve your skin daily with moisturizers and by gently washing with mild soaps in warm (not hot) baths and showers. If you notice new or irregularly shaped moles, see a dermatologist. "The sooner you're proactive, the more you can help yourself look younger, longer," she adds.
